Join the biggest Rugby community in town: Wuhan Baiji Rugby!

Back to school? Bring on the Rugby!

Wuhan Baiji RFC is an all-inclusive club with both ladies’ and gent’s teams whose goals are to promote and develop rugby in Wuhan and periodically compete in tournaments around China.
This season sees the start of our Wuhan Baiji Rugby Academy for 6-14 year old children.

Sure… that might be our official description… but here’s how a few of our members responded when asked what Baiji means to them.
“Baiji for me, represents different groups of people coming together to show the love and passion of rugby in different styles and ways.” – Ashley (Papua New Guinea, Men’s Team).
– Ashley(巴布亚新几内亚男子队)。

“To me, Baiji represents a group of people that love rugby, socializing, and making connections with others from around the world. The club consists of a large range of people from different countries and with different levels of rugby skills. You can be completely new to the sport and to Wuhan but from the moment you join you feel a sense of belonging.” – Breena (New Zealand, Ladies’ Team).
“Everyone who joins the club is accepted no matter their background in rugby or elsewhere.” – Alex (UK, Men’s Team)

Truly… playing rugby on a Saturday afternoon or Wednesday evening is one of the best ways around to get out, release stress from study, work or just from the day to day struggles of living abroad. As a club, we do our best on and off the field to push each other to keep fit and enjoy active and healthy lifestyles.
But most importantly we are a community of good people, coming from Samoa, Botswana, South Africa, Tanzania, Papua New Guinea, Poland, the UK, New Zealand, the U.S., Canada, just to name a few. Even our local Chinese friends join in on the action and would love to see more join us!

A few highlights from last year’s season

Last November, Wuhan played host to the Shanghai Silver Dragons, Shanghai Green Dragons and Changzhou Giants in our very own tournament. Offering a day of refreshment, rugby and riveting company.
Our Santa Sevens Showdown was a jolly festive day of touch rugby in December, which kept our spirits high. 7 teams entered. The competition was fierce… well between our Samoan, African, and Papua New Guinean teams it was anyway. A good time was had by all, even by those accommodating coworkers who came along for the ride.

Spurred on by our festive success, Baiji organised a Summer Sevens Showdown to encourage new and old players to play alongside one another. We had sunshine and dancing and the rugby was great too!

But of course, Baiji players don’t limit themselves to Wuhan. We’ve trekked across China to Beijing, Xiamen, Shanghai, Yiwu and more to join tournaments. Within our rugby sphere, tournaments are hosted in multiple cities across China, and we all love a good holiday.
Baiji ladies are particularly known across China for their creative post game costumes, in particular a dramatic entrance to the after-party as Hogwarts students (we were Gryffindor of course) as well as our theatrical rendition of ‘A thousand miles’, complete with pink fairy wings and tutus. (video available upon request).

The real beauty in Baiji rests in the attitude of our players: we’re friends; we care for and trust each other and greatly enjoy keeping each other company. As an independently thriving social community, the Baiji team go beyond calling ourselves a team, we’re a family.
